It has been awhile since we posted here at the website. We are social and do have newsworthy things to share, but like many musician friends we tend to roll old school and forget about spreading the news! This is definitely something we are looking forward to - a return trip to Australia, this time with honorary guest bassist Cary Black! You can up with our musical adventures at facebook and instagram. Thanks y’all!
We hope y'all have had as much fun this summer as we have! Over the past few weeks The Western Flyers have traveled coast-to-coast spreading the gospel of Western Swing and accumulating a massive amount of frequent flyer miles! A highlight was playing the outstanding Lowell Folk Festival in Lowell, Massachusetts. This is the largest free music festival in the United States drawing an estimated 175,000 enthusiastic festival goers. This event features musicians and artisans from around the globe, and food to die for! We then glided in to the legendary Club Passim in Cambridge. Over the years Club Passim has earned a reputation for featuring the finest in live music, having stellar sound (thanks Matt Smith!) and drawing enthusiastic audiences of friendly folks. The next day we hopped in the van for a ride to western Massachusetts to play the Watermelon Wednesdays concert series at The Chapel in West Whately. This series started 18 years ago and draws musicians from across country and listeners from all over the region. At the intermission of every show, folks make their way outside for plenty of tasty watermelon! A packed house of enthusiastic music lovers made this a really fun night.
We then flew from Boston to Portland, Oregon (that's a mighty long flight folks) for Oregon dates, then we made our way to the Land of Katie - Colorado! Starting off in beautiful Norwood, Colorado for the inaugural Norwood Food and Music Rendezvous, what a successful first year event! The capacity crowd were whooping it up and the dance floor stayed full all night. The next day we drove over the mountain to play an outdoor wedding reception in Telluride, Colorado. Absolutely stunning scenery and the large group of attendees put on a textbook demonstration of how to party!
After a bit of R & R, we are looking forward to upcoming shows in Texas and a return visit to Colorado. October brings our first time to play the Oklahoma International Bluegrass Festival in Guthrie, Oklahoma. A great festival with a stellar line-up, then the following weekend we play yet another first class festival, the Bob Wills Fiddle Festival and Contest in Greenville, Texas. Dedicated to the "King of Western Swing"- Bob Wills, featuring plenty of Western Swing, as well as a world-class fiddle contest with fiddlers from across the country competing for the coveted title of "Bob Wills Fiddle Champion"!
We hope to cross paths with Y'all down the trail and remember..... Western Swing is "AMERICA'S MOST POPULAR MUSIC"!!
Wow! All of us Western Flyers are honored and thrilled to accept the award for "Best Western Swing Group" at the 2017 Ameripolitan Awards in Austin, Texas! Congrats to all the winners and nominees, and a big thank you to Dale Watson and the Ameripolitan staff for putting on such a stellar show!
We are excited to share the news that we have been nominated for an Ameripolitan Award for "Western Swing Group of the Year"! The Ameripolitan Awards are the brainchild of Austin based classic country troubadour Dale Watson and honor traditional artists not represented by mainstream "country" music. Results will be announced Feb 15, 2017. As a new band, this is an exciting honor, thank you Ameripolitan!
In addition to the release of our debut album 'Wild Blue Yonder', we had an exciting and whirlwind summer - from Montana to France, Michigan to Italy, Maine to Arizona to name just a few stops. Looking forward to a restful winter and gearing up for a jam packed 2017! Keep up with us on Facebook and consider joining our email list for an update when the Flyers will be gliding your way in 2017!
It was a treat to share the stage with Western Swing supergroup The Time Jumpers, at one of the nicest sounding venues around - the historic Greenville Municipal Auditorium, Greenville Texas!
Recorded in the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado, 'Wild Blue Yonder' is a recording of three great friends playing the music we love - swinging Bob Wills classics, toe-tapping cowboy tunes, hot jazz and swing standards, classic honky-tonk songs, and high flying Texas fiddle tunes. Release date July 29, 2016. Amazing four panel artwork by Brad Smith. Ahh..haaa!
